The Causes of Sexual Dysfunction and Decline According To Traditional Chinese Medicine
Many cases of low libido, poor sexual performance, and other bedroom issues are caused by mental and emotional problems and are outside the interest of this page. Though the spiritual truths of Chinese medicine can play a role in healing some psychological problems, Chinese medicine can be of greatest help when sexual issues are caused by physiological problems.
According to TCM, most of these problems are related to energetic deficiencies. These deficiencies are called Kidney Deficiencies; though they rarely have much to do with the organ we know as the kidney. The term also relates to the reproductive system and to the body's stored energies (qi). Most sexual deficiencies are said to be caused by a combination of deficiencies.
There are 3 kinds of Kidney Deficiencies that can normally lead to sexual decline.
Kidney Yang Deficiency
Kidney Yin Deficiency
Kidney Jing Deficincy.
Chinese herbologists distinguish between these causes, and create prescriptions based on this pattern discrimination. Self diagnosis and prescription are generally not recommended. Use this link to find a practitioner near you.
However, many people do not live in areas where skilled practice is available. For those without recourse to Chinese herbologists, we offer the following information. Taken as directed, and unless otherwise noted, the products recommended will do no harm if improperly prescribed.
These Chinese herbs can be used by both sexes. Despite what you may have heard, there are no "herbs for men" or "women's herbs". Herbal prescriptions are based on pattern diagnosis, not simply on the sex of the user.
Herbs are chosen according to conditions which can effect either sex. A product like Man's Teasure, for example, can be a boost to the libido of a woman. Likewise Two Immortals, normally used by menopausal women to increase sex drive, can have the same effect on a man.
