Herbs Pregnant Women Should Avoid

Though most Chinese herbs are safe to take during pregnancy, most of the herbs catagorized as Vitalize Blood herbs and almost all the Purgative herbs could cause miscarriage and should be avoided during pregnancy.

Vitalize blood herbs to be avoided during pregnancy include safflowers - hong hua, peach pit kernals - tao ren, corydalis - yan hu suo, turmeric - yu jin, Chinese motherwort - yi mu cao, Chinese tea rose - yue ji hua, frankincense - ru xiang, myrrh - mo yao, leech - shui zhi.

Of the strong downward draining herbs used to relieve constipation, that should also be avoided during pregnancy, include Chinese rhubarb rhizome - da huang, epsom salts - mang xiao, senna - fang xie ye, and aloe vera - lu hui.

Herbs Safe for Pregnancy

Most all of the other herbs commonly used in Chinese medicine are safe to use during pregnancy. There are some Vitalize Blood herbs, often used to promote circulation and relieve pain, that are safe for pregnant women.

Common vitalize blood herbs that are safe to take during pregnancy include: Sechuan lovage root - chuan xiong, salvia miltorrhiza - dan shen, millettia - ji xue teng, luffa - si gua luo, and red peony root - chi shao.

Moistening herbs like marijuana seeds - huo ma ren, and walnut - hu tao ren as well as tonic herbs such as Chinese foxglove root -nshu di huang, and tang kwei - dang gui have a laxative action and are safe to use by pregnant women.

Chinese Medicine for Threatened Miscarrage

Once a micarriage begins there is little that Western medicine can do. Chinese medicine, on the other hand offers treatment to pregnant women who have had miscarriages before or who are beginning to experience the symptoms of miscarriage. Pregnant women who have had previous miscarriages are advised to consult with a Chinese herbalist. If none are available, the following Chinese medicines will do no harm and may be of help. The sooner they are taken the better.
