Chinese medicine has long been used to aid fertility. Records on treatment of infertility and miscarriage date back to 200 A.D.

The first book on gynecology is The Complete Book of Effective Prescriptions for Diseases of Women. It was published in 1237 A.D. Today in China, herbs are used to treat infertility in both men and women. Clinical trials are regularly reported in over 50 Chinese medical journals.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis is according to the four examinations. Diagnosis reveals the underlying disharmonies or other causes of infertility. Treatment can include acupuncture, herbs, movement, meditation, and massage. Treatment aims to restore harmony and balance and eliminate other impediments to conception.  As these conditions vary greatly from person to person, treatment protocols will also vary. A hidden advantage of this method is that, because it addresses root problems, other health benefits can accrue. Regardless of achieving pregnancy, many patients report improvements their health and sense of well being.

Herbs and Fertility
There are over 150 different herbs commonly used in the treatment of infertility. Herbs are usually given in combinations (formulae) which are often modified for each patient. Herbs can be administered as pills, powders, tablets, or decoctions (teas). All can be effective. Sucsess of Chinese Medicine
There are no guarantees of success, however clinical studies in China have shown that 70% of all cases of infertility, treated by Chinese medicine, resulted in pregnancy. Depending on the particular study and the types of infertility treated, success rates ranged from about 50% up to more than 90%. *
*Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, Oregon Safety of Treatment
The Chinese herbs used are entirely non toxic, but could, on rare occasion, cause adverse digestive reactions. These can be corrected by slight modification of the formula or by changing the method of administration. Allergic reactions are extremely rare. Acupuncture treatment is even safer, showing virtually no instances of adverse reations. Combining Therapies
In China, combining Western medical techniques along with Chinese methods is common. Some doctors are trained in both methods Most cases of infertility successfully treated in China are not the result of modern techniques such as in vitro fertilization. The Chinese consider these techniques overly expensive and are known to have only a modest rate of success.

When Pregnancy Occurs
Once pregnancy is confirmed. Treatment is usually discontinued. Only those with a history of miscarriage or those who suffer morning sickness will take herbs or acupuncture during pregnancy. Acupuncture and herbs can also be used to ease the pain of chilbirth and to treat breech birth and delayed labor.

Common Causes of Infertility

A combination of one or more of the following patterns is the root of many fertility problems.

1. Deficiency Pattern - which effects the hormonal system, impairing sexual and reproductive functions. 2. Stagnation Pattern - which has the effect of restricting circulation of qi and blood to the reproductive organs.

3. Heat or Cold Pattern - which causes the affected organs to function abnormally, by altering the mucous membrane, or raising or lowering the local temperature. In all cases, the aim of treatment is to harmonize the underlying imbalances to restore normal physiological functions.

IVF, ACUPUNCTURE & CHINESE HERBS

Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine are valuable complements to in vitro fertilization, and may significantly benefit the outcome of this procedure.According to Dr. Lifang Liang, who experimented using Chinese medicine as an adjunct to IVF at the University of Texas, Chinese medicine increases the success rate of in vitro fertilization by as much as 50%. IVF patients are given herbs and acupuncture at several critical stages during the procedure. At the first stage, when birth controls pills are administered to regulate hormonal activity, herbs and acupuncture are used to insure smooth flow to the ovaries.Next, when drugs are given to stimulate egg production, Chinese herbs and acupuncture are used to ease the stimulating side-effects of the drugs. Similar herbs are also used before implantation to relax the muscles, prevent contraction, and better enable the embryo to implant upon the uterus.

Other herbs with a long history of preventing miscarriage are used after transfer to strengthen the womb and avert miscarriage. Herbs for Miscarrage

WOMEN'S PRECIOUS PILLS
Also known as: Tang Kwei Pill, Dang Gui Pill, Women's Precious Pill, Eight Treasures, Ba Zhen Wan

TRADITIONAL USES
Used to benefit the body's nourishing flows of Blood (nourishment) and Qi (energy). When Blood and Qi are weak, the body goes hungry regardless of diet.
Dr. Shen's Woman's Precious Pill is used as a daily supplement to boost and maintain Blood and Qi. Though this pill is used by both men and women, it is often used by women as a fertility aid or to supplement regular blood loss due to menstruation. Especially useful for women who eat little or no red meat.

SOURCE
A powerful version of the classical formula known as Eight Treasures. It was first published in the Zheng Ti Lei Yao (Catalogued Essentials for Correcting the Body) by Dr. Bi Lai Zhai in the year 1529.

PRACTITIONER NOTES
The herb angelica sinensis, Dang Gui (tang kwei) should never be administered as a single herb. It is always combined with other herbs. The blend used in Dr. Shen's Woman's Precious Pill is the most widely used of these combinations. It brings out the best qualities of the herbi while eliminating any unwanted effects.Though this formula is used as a daily supplement to maintain good health, it is also used to treat symptoms related to deficiencies such as: Fatigue, weakness, menstual irregularities, tired limbs, pallor, pale tongue, infertility, shortness of breath or palpitations, lightheadedness, reduced appetite.

Dr. Shen's Woman's Precious Pills, like most modern versions of this formula, uses Dang Shen (Codonopsis) instead of Ren Shen (Ginseng), making it cost effective, more tonifying to the Spleen, and helping the user to better assimilate the four Blood tonic herbs.

TRADITIONAL SERVING
Four to Six tablets are recommended daily for health maintenance. Relieving symptoms can require nine to twelve or more tablets daily. Ideally, these are taken in three doses, preferably on an empty stomach. Compliance, however, may improve when taken twice-a-day, half in the morning and half in the evening.

COURSE OF USE
The course of use is a minimum of one month and a maximum of eleven months per year.

The pills can also be taken together with Dr. Shen's Free and Easy Pills (also known as Shao Yao Wan) to help circulation and drainage while still strengthening the Blood.

SUGGESTION
Like most Chinese herbal tonics (strengtheners), discontinue during cold and flu.
