Cholesterol Levels: A Chinese Medicine Point of View
There's nothing in the ancient books about cholesterol, as measuring cholesterol in the blood is an invention of 20th century Western medicine. Yet there is plenty of information in Chinese medical history about the what happens to people who eat too much fatty foods. This is called a rich man's diet, and the outcome of this high cholesterol diet is well known. Heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and other diseases have long been known to result from a rich man's diet. Because of their high cholesterol diets, few of the Chinese emporers lived very long.
Lower Cholesterol Using Diet, Statin Drugs, or Chinese Medicine
It's common sense to practitioners of both Western and Chinese medicine, that a low fat diet is the best way to lower cholesterol. Cholesterol lowering statin drugs can be costly and have risks and side effects. Few people know that the statin drugs were created from a Chinese herb, red rice yeast. Though the herb is relatively safe, the drugs may not be. Despite the press generated by a huge cholesterol lowering drug industry, these drugs have been in use only a short time. Their long term effects are still unknown. From the perspective of Chinese medicine, which covers thousand of years, all these drugs should be considered experimental. Unless your cholesterol level is alarmingly high, you may want to try the Chinese cholesterol lowering herbs and herbal medicines first, as they are absolutely safe, and have been used for centuries to combat an overly rich diet.
HDL, LDL, The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Cholesterol
From the perspective of Chinese medicine the currently accepted wisdom about good cholesterol, bad cholesterol, high cholesterol, and low cholesterol should be taken with a grain of salt. Today's truth can easily prove to be tommorrow's folly. Look back only 50 years and notice how much of the "wisdom" of Western medicine has changed. If you're old enough to remember, 50 years ago every doctor (and shoe store) used a fluoroscope, doctors smoked and thought it was OK for pregnant women to smoke and drink alcohol. MDs saw no connection between obesity and diabetes, and Thalidimide was considered a safe tranquilizer. It takes time to sort the good from the bad. You can be sure that 50 years from now, much of what is true will be considered false. Chinese medicine has been used, tested, and refined over hundreds and thousands of years.
