Excess Type
Red, purple, or painful hemorrhoids are related to Stagnation and Heat in the Large Intestine. This condition is often caused by dietary excess but may also be related to constipation and emotional constraint, which can constrain the normal flow of qi and blood. Anal pain and rectal inflammation even without the presence of hemorrhoids can also indicate this condition.
Deficient Type
Soft or prolapsed hemorrhoids indicate a Prolapse of Qi. This means that our body's energy is loosing its lifting quality. Leakage from the intestines or diarrhea indicates the possibility of Spleen Qi deficiency as well.
You can have one or the other, or both types together.
Cures for hemorrhoids can only be effected by regulating the life of the sufferer to gradually eliminate the causes. Herbs and acupuncture can not cure these conditions, but they can help
Acupuncture for Hemorrhoids
When hemorrhoids are due to stagnation and heat, acupuncture can clear heat by promoting flow. Commonly used points include DU 2 and UB 38 on the sacrum, Large Intestine 4 between the thumb and forefinger, DU 1 between the anus and tailbone, and other points on the back of the calf and leg.
When Prolapse of Qi is a factor, DU 20 and other points on the top of the head are added.
For Excess type hemorrhoids especially bleeding hemorrhoids. 3 or 4 tablets, 3 times per day. May contain excess heavy metals, so use only for short periods of time. Not for children, pregnant women, or nursing women. *U
