Chinese Medicine for Bronchitis Theory
According to Western medicine, bronchitis is a disease of the lungs effecting the bronchial tubes or airways. Acute bronchits starts suddenly and lasts only a week or two. This kind if bronchitis is usually brought on by a viral respiratory infection which may also effect the nose or sinuses. Occasionally acute bronchitis isssociated with a bacterial infection and treated with antibiotics.
Chinese medicine views acute bronchitis as a pathogenic invasion of either wind-cold or wind heat. This is much the same as the chinese medical view if any respiratory infection. Distinctions are made between wind-heat and wind-cold based on the type of symptoms and their severity.
Chronic bronchitis is a long-term condition, usually involving a productive cough (cough with phlegm) that lasts for more than 3 months. In Western medicine, chronic bronchitis is sometimes regarded as a type of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease)
Chinese medicine regards chronic bronchitis as a lung deficiency which may or may not have started as a viral attack, but which results in depleted lung energy (qi). It is usually accompanied by phlegm. The origin of the phlegm is usually the digestive system (spleen) which results in the accumulation of water effecting the lungs.
Chinese Medicine and Herbs for Bronchitis
Treating acute bronchitis with Chinese medicine usually involves herbs and herbal medicines with anti viral and phlegm dissolving properties. Anti viral herbs such as sang ye (mulberry leaf), jin yin hua (honeysuckle flower) or ban lan gen (isatis root), are often combined with phlegm clearing herbs such as jie geng (ballon flower), gua lou, and tian hua fen (fritallary).
Prepared medicines for acute bronchitis include
Fritallary Extract, (for yellow or difficult to expectorate phlegm)
Pinnellia Expectorant Pills, (for white or clear phlegm)
Hsiao Ke Chuan Pills (cough pills)
Treating Chronic bronchitis or anr other chronic lung disease is more complicated and is best done with the guidance of a Chinese herbologist. Often, the above mentioned products are combined with other herbs or herbal medicines used to stregnthen the lungs and the spleen. Quite frequently these formulas will contain herbs such as ban xia (prepared pinellia), sheng jiang (ginger root), and huang qi (astragalus).
Some commonly used products to stregnthen the lungs are:
Er Chen Wan (with spleen damp effecting the lungs)
Ping Chuan Pills (when asthma is also diagnosed)
Jade Shield Pills (for immune boost)
Research on Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine for Bronchitis and Pulmonary Diseases
Effect of laser acupuncture on the pulmonary vascular resistance in Patients with obstructive chronic lung diseases]
Klinicheskaia Meditsina, 1991 May, 69(5):68-71.
Abstract: 111 Patients were asessed (50 with chronic obstructive bronchitis and 61 with bronchial asthma) to study the effect of laser puncture. The treatment course consisted of 10 sessions performed with application of Uzor apparatus
.
The results indicate a positive response to infra-red laser acupuncture evident from improved bronchial patency, enhanced bronchial sensitivity to sympathomimetics, reduced systolic pressure in the pulmonary artery. The promise of the laser puncture is attributed to its separate broncholytic effect and the ability to lower pulmonary vascular resistance.
Randomized study to evaluate efficacy of Chinese medicine in treatment of lung lesions
To evaluate efficacy of Calculus Bovis (ox gallstone) compound preparation named ICCBco in the treatment of lung lesions in portal hypertensive rabbits with schistosommiasis. A research group in China performed a randomized, double-blind, controlled trial to observe pathological changes and pathological effect mechanism of expression of fibronectin and laminin in the lung tissue
ICCBco is composed of Calculus Bovis, Chinese Paris Rhizome, polygonum cuspidatum, appendiculate cremastra pseudobulb, frankincense, and myrrh, and has the functions of clearing away heat and toxic materials, removing blood stasis, reducing swelling, eliminating blood stasis and promoting tissue regeneration, according to the principle of traditional Chinese medicine.
The group led by Tao Li, MD, evaluated the efficacy of ICCBco in the treatment of lung lesions. The study suggests that it is of great significance and prospects for further basic and clinical research, development and clinical application of new drugs and preparations to treat portal hypertensive pulmonary lesions.
